Ecluse a short film produced by P L Thenappan was screened last week’s prestigious Cannes Film Festival – 2009 (CFF) in the short film category. Ecluse a short film directed by Mahendran Baskar, a Sri Lankan Tamil settled in France, made it to the Cannes Film Festival – 2009 (CFF). Mahendra Bhaskar himself has performed the lead role along with Elmoden Nassima and Abinaya Kaneshtampaia. The film titled ‘Ecluse’ means nothing but ‘Water Barrier’.
According to the producer, Ecluse is a love story set in Paris. Hero falls in love with French girl. The couple have a child but because of work load father can’t spend much time with his child. The mother is also always busy with other works. So they are not able to spend much time with child. The child is neglected and one day the teacher notices that the kid doesn’t feel happy at school and calls her parents. After the discussion the school management decides to give the child to the Child Care Service. The heart wrenching climax describes whether the child will be sent to child care service or not.

The latest to join the list of behind-the-screen film artists who turn into actors is Pa. Vijay. The ace lyricist has donned the greasepaint for Gnabagangal, a film which has a very good and different storyline. Sree Devika, who has acted in Ramakrishna, Anbevaa and is acting in Sarithram, is the film’s heroine.
The movie Gnabagangal, in which National Award winning lyricist Pa Vijay plays the lead, is based on a real life story.
In a touching short film that was screened to journalists, the lyricist spoke about his late friend Kathiravan, with whom he shared a room during his early days in the industry, and Kathiravan’s love affair with Meera, who was their neighbour.
“Kathiravan, who believed in socialism, went back to his native place with a broken heart after he was arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. After a few months, when I went to meet him, he was no more. However, I found a diary in my room that belonged to him. The incidents that he recorded in his diary have been made into this film,” said Pa Vijay and added, “This film will keep his memories alive.”
Gnabagangal is not the first film for Pa. Vijay, who was supposed to debut in Thai Kaviyam, a film launched by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi a year ago. But even before it could be completed, he got the offer of playing lead role of Gnabagangal. Introduced in Gnanapazham in 1996, Pa. Vijay has written more than 1200 songs for 600 films! Interestingly, he is perhaps the only actor who had won a National Award even before he became an actor! Vijay has won National Award for the song “Ovoru Pookalume” of Autograph.
Jeevan, who debuted in Kollywood as a cinematographer through Kokki, is the director of this Gnabagangal film. He has already directed Mayilu.

Raajkamal Films International cordially invites you to the inauguration of the Chennai International Screenwriting Workshop at the ICSR auditorium, IIT-Madras.

The Chennai International Screenwriting Workshop, the first of its kind in South India, hosted by Raajkamal Films International in association with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, will kick off with a brief inaugural session on May 28.
The workshop will culminate with a two-day seminar with some of the best screenwriters and filmmakers from around the world.
French writer Jean Claude Carriere, Olivier Lorelle (whose film Indigenes was nominated to the Oscars 2006) and Shekhar Kapur, will share their thoughts with the likes of K. Balachander, Balu Mahendra, Gulzar, Gollapudi Maruthi Rao, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Vishal Bharadwaj, Rituparno Ghosh, Shyamaprasad and Sriram Raghavan at the seminar between June 2 and June 3, 2009.
“I envy the 250 delegates who will get to be there at the ICSR auditorium at IIT to listen to the masters and attend the screenwriting workshop to be conducted by Anjum Rajabali, Atul Tiwari and K.Hariharan,” says Kamal Haasan.
Kamal Haasan is dedicating the seminar to his dear old friend Ananthu, who first introduced him to world cinema.
“Ananthu was the one who got me into writing. Suchitra Film Society would screen films from around the world. Every time films came for festivals, we would hijack the films and watch them,” he recalls. “Once I could afford it, I went to the US and spent some time with (John) Truby. He was like my coach. He introduced me to all the tools I needed. Thevar Magan was the first film here to be written with Movie Magic, a screenwriting software.”
Later in the nineties, he met Luis Bunuel’s regular hand Jean Claude Carriere, who went on to become the co-writer for Maruthanayagam. “He then introduced me to Abbas Kiarostami and that was the first time we spoke of mentoring writers and filmmakers. Because not all storytellers make for good screenwriters. Even if Shakespeare was around today, he would have to learn screenwriting. Not to say screenwriting is greater than Shakespeare. It’s just that the rules of the game have changed. It took me nearly twenty years to learn what is today taught in film schools. These 250 students we have selected will need just a week to take their first baby step towards writing.”
The speakers all belong to different schools of cinema.
“All the people I have called are people I have learned from even if they are younger than me. Some of them are people I consider mentors. Mr. Balachander has written and produced 100 different films, Mr. Balu Mahendra and I wish Mani Ratnam could’ve come too but he has a film to complete
